We have met multiple people along this trip who have traveled the entire circumference of Lake Superior. Every single one of them has boasted about how the North western shore hosts the most spectacular sights and adventures of the entire lake. The ANIMIKII section of Path of the Paddle runs about 94 km from Thunder Bay to Grand Portage and golly- Jee it is beautiful. The water is crystal clear, appearing almost ocean teal and the cliffs bare their faces for paddlers to gawk at. There are plenty of larger islands which all deserve exploring, and although there are not many established campsites, the flat, open rocky shores of many bays and islands make for perfect nooks to call home for the night. We were surprised at the remote feeling of having the lake to ourselves as the ANIMIKII trail is actually quite accessible. There are many bays with road access. The amount of options of put-in places offers paddlers a huge range of day trip possibilities. We would highly recommend setting up camp and taking a few days to paddle around and explore. Paddling the entirety from Thunder Bay to Grand Portage would be a 5-10 day trip, but there are endless combinations of day trips or shorter 1-5 day sections which would be a dreamy way to spend a weekend during your paddling season. One can get brainwashed by the intimidating beauty and immensity of the lake. It is humbling though to connect with the history of the ANIMIKII trail -- the travels of the voyageurs and Indigenous people through Fort William and Grand Portage during the fur trade. Mark down the ANIMIKII trail in your bucket list and look out for more info and route auditing from Path of the Paddle for this section-- it is a must- see for sure! Just remember to pack accordingly...Lake Superior's wrath of fog and chilly winds balances her blessing of awe inspiring beauty. Bring a toque, a compass and a waterproof camera!
